GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team has been living on the edge and picked up their second straight one-goal win on a blustery and cold Saturday afternoon over Walsh. The Panthers won 13-12 for their first back-to-back wins this season in the final non-conference game of the season. DU will now embark on five GLVC games in the month of April.
DU (3-5) have now played in four straight one-goal games and handed Walsh their sixth loss of the season (2-6). Davenport looked to be in control after a 4-0 lead through the first quarter.
Dylan Day opened the scoring at 13:35 from
Luke Eichbauer.
James Johnston added to the lead at 4:55 unassisted and then
Jayden Ashley scored twice at 4:18 and 3:55. Johnston assisted on the first goal and
Keelan McKouen assisted on the second goal.
Walsh battled back with two goals to start the second quarter. Evan Stertz scored at 11:28 followed by a man-up goal from Ty Pikington at 10:41. The Panthers still had a 7-4 lead though going into halftime. McKouen, Johnston, and
Trevor McDonald scored in the second quarter for the Panthers.
Walsh made a run and scored the first four goals of the third quarter to take an 8-7 lead with 7:55 left after Pikington's second goal of the game. Ashley's third goal of the game ended the spurt to tie it up at 8 with 6:35 left in the quarter from Johnston. The teams were tied at 9 after the third quarter.
The Cavaliers scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter which was the largest deficit of the day for Davenport. Evan Stertz scored his fourth goal of the game at 12:08 and Hudson Dennill added to the lead at 7:13. The Johnston effect was in full force as he scored three straight goals to give the Panthers a 12-11 lead with 4:29 remaining. Stertz not to be undone scored his fifth goal of the game at 2:10 remaining. With under a minute to play, Walsh took a slashing penalty and DU called a timeout. McKouen took a shot with 20 seconds left and Alex Movshin made the save for Walsh. He then fired the ball all the way downfield and it was picked up by
Daniel Milano for the Panthers near the cage. Milano passed it quickly upfield and McKouen got another chance and didn't miss with the game-winning goal with seven seconds left for the 13-12 lead. Walsh won the ensuing faceoff but could not get off a shot in the final seconds.
Davenport took 43 shots with 27 shots on goal. Walsh committed 25 turnovers including 15 in the first half which led to their deficit. The Cavaliers did however win 17-of-29 in the face-off circle and finished 3-for-5 in extra man chances. Johnston had a monster game with five goals and four assists. Ashley finished with three goals and six shots on goal.
Kaden Seelye on defense caused one turnover and scooped up eight groundballs.
