SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Hayley Kreiger recorded three hits, a double, six RBIs, and a run to lead the Davenport softball team to a 14-8 win over Quincy Saturday afternoon on the first day of the UIS Tournament. The Panthers (5-10,0-0 GLIAC) were originally scheduled to play McKendree as well, but the game was canceled due to poor field conditions.
The graduate student first baseman entered the record books with the performance, tying the second-highest number of RBIs recorded in a single game in program history. Rachel Griffin holds the top spot, as she batted in seven runners on Feb. 27, 2020, against Cedarville.
The Panthers' offense erupted in the second inning after finding themselves in an early 4-0 deficit. With the bases loaded, Alex Rendon singled to left field to bring home Brooke Bernt, marking the first run of the day for DU. Kreiger capped off the inning with a double to center field, allowing Elisse Omey and Becca Daoust to reach home and gain a 5-4 lead for the Panthers.
The Hawks (5-8, 0-0 GLVC) responded with one run in the bottom of the inning to tie things up at five apiece.
Holding an 8-6 lead over Quincy to conclude the fourth inning, Kreiger broke the game open in the top of the fifth for Davenport, hitting a three-RBI double to center field. Daoust recorded final run of the inning to give DU a commanding 14-6 lead down the stretch.
Kaycee Loehr finished the game batting 4-for-5 with two runs in the victory for the Panthers. Daoust added three hits and three runs to go along with a stolen base and an RBI, while Rendon chipped in by batting 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for DU.
Elise Magnus (1-1) earned the win in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings, registering four strikeouts, and only allowing two runs.
The Panthers will return for day two of the UIS Tournament with a pair of games against Illinois Springfield at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
