Kreiger Comes Up Clutch to Seal Sweep Over Bulldogs

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -  Hayley Kreiger knocked out a three-run home run in the final inning in the back half of Sunday's doubleheader to lead the Davenport softball team to a pair of victories over Ferris State.

Game 1
Result: W, 2-1
How it Happened:
Kelsey Byers led the Panthers (9-16, 4-2 GLIAC) from inside the circle in the defensive battle, pitching all seven innings and striking out six batters while only allowing five hits.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, pitcher Emma Miller recorded her first hit of the year for Davenport to bring home Becca Daoust to tie the game at one apiece.

In the ensuing inning, Riley Hasseld scored the go-ahead run from third base for DU as Kaycee Loehr reached on an error.

Hasseld led the Panthers with a pair of hits to go along with her game-winning run. Kaycee Loehr added two hits, while Kreiger and Lindsay Goodman each tallied one hit in the win.

Game 2
Result: W, 5-3
How it Happened:
Kreiger continues to be one of the best athletes in all of the GLIAC as the All-American volleyball player came through when it mattered most with a three-run home run to take a 5-3 lead in the final inning for the Panthers.

The Bulldogs (12-22, 2-4 GLIAC) entered the final inning with a three-run advantage, leading 3-0.

Miller got things going for Davenport in the seventh inning as she doubled to left field to bring home Daoust to spark the late game comeback.

Moments later, freshman Aaliyah Walker hit a single to bring home Miller as she scored her first run of the season to trim the deficit to one and set up the Kreiger game-winning home run.

To go along with her two hits, one run and one RBI, Miller pitched four innings, striking out one batter and only allowing two runs through four innings pitched. Makayla Thompson pitched the final three innings, striking out one batter while only allowing one run during her time in the circle.

Gabby Palazzolo finished with one hit and one run in the win for DU, while Goodman, Brooke Cowan, and Walker all added one hit.

Up Next:
The Panthers will put a pause on GLIAC action and take on Hillsdale in a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Farmers Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Mich. at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow.
