History Made: Kreiger Hits Natural Cycle

HAMMOND, Ind. - Hayley Kreiger made history, recording the first cycle in Davenport University softball history Saturday afternoon in game two of the team's doubleheader against Purdue Northwest. The South Haven, Mich. native did it in order, one of the rarest achievements in sports as it has only been done 14 times in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Despite the all-time performance from Kreiger, the Panthers (13-30, 7-15 GLIAC) could not take down the Pride (32-20, 15-9 GLIAC), dropping both games of the doubleheader.

Game 1
Result: L, 13-5 (5 Inn.)
How it Happened:
The Panthers controlled the first 4.5 innings of the game, leading 5-0 after the top of the fifth inning. However, the Pride rattled off a 13-run inning to secure a 13-5 victory over DU.

Kreiger, the Panthers home run leader on the season (8), hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Davenport the early 2-0 advantage.

Holding PNW to just one hit through the first three innings, the Panthers posted two more runs in the fourth, stretching their lead to four. Lindsay Goodman brought the pair of runs in, hitting a two-RBI single through the right side.

Leading the DU offense was Kreiger, batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a home run. Becca Daoust added two hits and a run, while Goodman chipped in with a pair of hits and RBIs for the Panthers.

In the circle, Emma Miller pitched 4.1 innings, racking up three strikeouts while only allowing two hits through the first four innings.

Game 2
Result: L, 8-6
How it Happened:
Kreiger started the historic game with a single up the middle in the first inning. On the ensuing at-bat, Goodman hit an RBI single allowing Daoust to round the bases for the first run of the game. Moments later, Kreiger reached home off a Kaycee Loehr sacrifice fly, giving DU the 2-0 advantage to start the game.

In the top of the third, trailing 4-2, Kreiger hit a double to center field to start off the inning, later reaching home on a fielding error from PNW, trimming the deficit to one.

Continuing her hot streak, Kreiger was the leadoff batter in the fifth, drilling a triple to right center field. The first baseman then scored another run for the Panthers as Brooke Cowan reached on a fielder's choice.

Capping off the historic game, Kreiger hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to one as DU was trailing 7-4.

Kreiger ended the game batting 4-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs to lead the Panthers. Daoust added a hit to go along with two runs and has now recorded a hit in six consecutive games for DU.

Miller and MaKayla Thompson split time in the circle as they combined for three strikeouts through six innings pitched.

Up Next:
The Panthers will return home for their final contests of the 2023 regular season, a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State on Monday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Complex. The games will serve as senior day for Davenport with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. and the second game to follow.
