Panthers Drop Game One of GLIAC Tournament

ROSEMONT, Ill. -  The No. 5 seed Davenport University softball team fell 7-3 to No. 2 seed Saginaw Valley State Thursday afternoon in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament.

It was a scoreless first two innings for both squads before the Cardinals (32-14, 14-7 GLIAC) put up three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the first lead of the contest.

SVSU brought home two more runs in the fourth inning to expand its lead to 5-0 midway through the game.

Brooke Bernt sparked the Panthers' (13-31, 7-15 GLIAC) offense doubling to left center field to lead off the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Bernt reached home off a passed ball from Saginaw Valley to put the first run of the day on the board for DU.

In the ensuing inning, Aaliyah Walker scored on a wild pitch for the Panthers' second run of the contest. Bernt again made things happen, hitting an RBI single to trim the deficit to four down the stretch.

Bernt ended the day batting two-for-three with a double, one run, and an RBI for the Panthers. Gabby Palazzolo added a pair of hits, including a triple in the loss for DU.

Kelsey Byers and Emma Miller combined for 11 strikeouts in the circle for Davenport.

The Panthers will now take on top-seeded Grand Valley State University tomorrow morning at noon EST.
