Panthers take game three of series against Saginaw Valley State

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team played game three of their six-game series at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon against Saginaw Valley State. After today's windy contest, the Panthers remained undefeated in the series with a 6-4 win over the Cardinals who are now 12-15 overall (4-6 GLIAC). The win extended the Panthers win streak to five, as they improved to 13-17 overall (7-3 GLIAC). The game hung in the balance until the seventh inning with Davenport leading 3-2 when Miko Rodriguez had a RBI single to right field and then Logan Hylek scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2.

The Panthers were very fortunate as they were aided with two errors from the Cardinals in the bottom of the first inning. Those errors were converted into two unearned runs and three total runs. Davenport owed a lot of credit to their starting pitcher Isaac Van Dyke. The junior held the Cardinals scoreless for five straight innings after giving up a run in the first. Van Dyke earned the win today improving to 3-1 and won his second straight start. He finished with six strikeouts and just one walk in six innings on the mound.

The game would slow down significantly after a busy first inning. However, the Cardinals started to make a comeback as Jaccar Watkins hit a perfect ball to the right center for a triple. With a single from Brandon Scheurer, Watkins was able to score a run off his big hit. At this moment, the score was 3-2 Davenport, but they would score twice in the bottom of the seventh as mentioned.

Caleb Anspaugh kept the good times rolling as he scored a run late in the eighth off a throwing error to make it 6-2. Anspaugh reached base on a double to lead off the inning. It was DU's only extra-base hit of the game. Saginaw Valley State did not go away quietly as they scored two runs in the ninth inning, which ultimately forced Davenport to pull out their secret weapon in Logan Bursick-Harrington. Aaron Ball had given up the two runs and two runners were on base when Bursick-Harrington came in and got the final out with a strikeout looking of Reed Raymond. He was awarded his fourth save of the year and has a save in each of his last three appearances. He also lowered his season ERA to 2.00 which leads the team.

The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 PM. Game one is a seven-inning game followed by a nine-inning game.
