Sy Barnett (Williamston, Mich.) has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League. Barnett becomes the first Panther to sign with an NFL franchise and did so right after the NFL Draft concluded on Saturday.
Barnett made an immediate impact in his one year at Davenport. He was named to the Don Hansen Division II All-America Team as an honorable mention selection and was also named First Team All-GLIAC. Barnett finished with 53 catches for 694 yards and four touchdowns. He set single-season school records in receptions and receiving yards in a season. Barnett had a season-high 124 receiving yards on eight catches with two scores at Northern Michigan (Oct. 8). He also had a season-high nine grabs for 99 yards and two scores in the season opener at Truman State. Barnett also contributed on special teams with nine punt returns for 59 yards, two kick returns for 25 yards, and 19 punts for 798 yards including a DU record of 87 yards on a punt at Ferris State (Nov. 5).
