GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The rivalry between Davenport and Grand Valley State resumed over the weekend in ACHA Division I men's hockey. The teams split a pair of games earlier this season and are fighting for standings in the GLCHL. The Lakers made it three straight wins over the Panthers with a 6-5 overtime win on Friday and a 7-1 win on Saturday in Hudsonville.
Friday's night was a very entertaining game and it looked like Davenport was going to pull off the win. The Panthers led 5-3 after two periods, but GVSU scored twice in the third period and again in overtime for the comeback victory. With the two-goal lead heading into the third period, the momentum changed when Joshua Suzio scored his sixth goal of the season short-handed at the 39-second mark. Shane Haggerty buried his seventh goal of the season at the 10:51 mark which put the game into overtime. The Lakers had three shots on goal in the extra period and on the third attempt it was Gage Thrall scoring with just 10 seconds left for the winner.
Devin Naidow and
Kyler Lowden battled it out in net all night. Naidow made 25 saves for the Lakers while Lowden stopped 35 shots.
Heath Drye had a pair of assists for the Panthers. Five different players scored a goal including
Brendan Bauer,
Peter Stojcevski,
Trent Benedict,
Keelan Saworski, and
Tyler Kaminski.
The Lakers left little doubt in the Saturday contest despite the Panthers having more shots on net (39-37). The Lakers scored twice in the first period, three more times in the second period, and twice more in the third period. They were able to build a 6-0 lead before Davenport got on the board at 2:47 of the third period.
Noah Bradburn scored his third of the season from Kaminski and Saworski. Haggerty had a pair of goals for GVSU and Jackson Collard and Nicklas Sommerfield led their team with three assists.
Naidow once again got the goaltending win stopping 38-of-39 shots for the Lakers. The Panthers started
Nathan Gauthier who stopped 30-of-37 shots in the loss.
The Panthers (15-10) will hit the ice again this Wednesday (Jan. 24) with a road game at Western Michigan. The puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 PM at Wings West in Kalamazoo. The Panthers have won all three meetings against the Stallions this season.
