Panthers Hold Off Late Surge from Cards for Monday Night Victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport men's basketball team held off a late rally by Saginaw Valley State to pick up an 82-81 victory on Monday evening at the DU Student Center.

With 4:45 remaining in the contest, Jovan Tucker drained a free throw to push the Panthers' lead to 12. However, the Cardinals (6-10, 2-5 GLIAC) responded by trimming their deficit to one with five seconds remaining. SVSU fouled Jaden Terrell with one second remaining, sending him to the free-throw line for two shots. Terrell missed both free throws, but the Cards were out of timeouts and the clock expired before they could get the chance to get off a full-court shot to complete the comeback.

Davenport took a 41-30 advantage into the break, led by Marcedus Leech Jr. who had 13 points in the first half. The Panthers are now 5-1 on the season after leading at the break.

A three-pointer from Tucker with 15:29 remaining in the second half gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the night, 16 (54-38).

Jeff Carrier tied a career high in points for the Panthers (6-10, 2-5 GLIAC), pouring in 18 points and securing three steals. Tucker set a career-high in points for the second consecutive game, scoring 15 points while grabbing eight boards and dishing out four assists in the win for DU. Myles Belyeu notched his second consecutive double-double, scoring 12 points, collecting 12 rebounds and tallying six assists.

Leading all scorers for Davenport was Leech Jr., dropping 22 points while securing two rebounds and adding two assists. Matas Deksnys chipped in with nine points, all coming from behind the arc.
