DU's third period surge held off by Pride to close weekend series

HAMMOND, Ind. - Davenport University men's D2 ice hockey dropped a pair of contests against Purdue Northwest, with the second matchup going down to the wire on Nov. 2.

The Pride took the first game 4-1 on Nov. 1 in the Panthers' third home contest of the year, but DU's much closer result showcased their persistence to fight to the end. Trailing 3-0 going into the final period of the second game, a concerted offense saw all three Panther goals scored in just over 16 minutes. A quick score by Nathan Mastrony inside the first two minutes cut the deficit to 3-1, as a sloppy defense by PNW allowed Lukas Lyszyk to create a lane for Brayden Bartlett to score another goal for DU (3-2). However, the Pride responded in exactly seven seconds to increase its lead by two scores, 4-2.

Although Lysyzk was able to tuck in another goal for the Panthers with 2:05 remaining, PNW prevented DU from recording a game-tying score, finishing the weekend series 2-0 overall for the opponent.

Liam Whitley played all 60 minutes in the Nov. 2 contest, making 36 saves in the effort.
