Tucker Stays Hot, But Panthers Fall in GLIAC Opener

DETROIT, Mich. -  The Davenport University men's basketball team dropped its first GLIAC contest of the 2024-25 season, falling 76-67 to Wayne State on Thursday evening at the WSU Fieldhouse.

Jovan Tucker led all scorers with 22 points, marking the second consecutive game that the senior has eclipsed 20 points and the third time this season. The guard also finished with two rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal to lead the way for the Panthers (2-5, 0-1 GLIAC).

Joey Cabana nailed a shot from deep 2:30 into the game to put DU ahead of the Warriors (2-4, 1-0 GLIAC) by five (8-3). After falling behind by as many as nine points, the Panthers inched their way back into the game and eventually regained a one-point lead (32-33) heading into the break after Cabana made a mid-range jumper.  The freshman ended the first half with an impressive 13 points.

DU put together a 7-0 run spanning 2:35, spurred by a two-point basket from Dylan Smith, giving them a 50-45 advantage with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest. However, Wayne State responded with an insurmountable 17-4 run, going ahead of Davenport 62-54 with 4:23 left to play.

Finishing with 16 points for the second consecutive game was Cabana, as he has now scored in double figures in four consecutive contests. Smith added 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and four rebounds for the Panthers. Isaiah Foster chipped in with a career-high six points and a team-high five assists in the loss.
