Freshmen Frontcourt Fuels Strong Second Half in 64-61 Loss

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -  The Davenport University men's basketball team fell to Saginaw Valley State 64-61 on Saturday afternoon at O'Neil Arena.

The freshmen frontcourt duo of Dylan Smith and Matyas Vrabel made their presence known in the second half, as they combined for 19 points in the final 20 minutes and the Panthers (2-6, 0-2 GLIAC) outscored the Cardinals (4-3, 1-1 GLIAC) 39-36 in the half.

Smith made a layup four minutes into the second half, setting in motion a 10-0 run for the Panthers, trimming their deficit to two (38-36). However, the Cardinals regained a double-digit lead with 9:06 remaining, before DU answered with a 7-0 run capped by a jumper from Jovan Tucker, setting the score at 48-45 in favor of SVSU.

A mid-range pull-up jumper from Joey Cabana gave DU its first lead of the contest with 2:28 left to play. Saginaw responded with an 8-4 run to close out the game, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch.

Smith led Davenport with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Tucker finished with 14 points and nine boards for the Panthers, while Vrabel added nine points and three rebounds. Cabana chipped in with seven points in the loss.
