Panthers hold off Knights to extend winning streak

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A tight battle unfolded between Davenport University men's lacrosse and Calvin University, the Panthers walking away with a 13-10 victory over the Knights.

Calvin struck first at the 11:06 mark of the first period, but Luke Fritz responded minutes later (8:28) to level the score off an assist by Charlie Fritz, 1-1. With 5:35 remaining in the first period, DU held a 3-1 lead after goals scored by Jayden Ashley (assist Braylon Baker) and Ashley (assist Griffin Poll), but the Knights took advantage of two costly penalties called against the Panthers that created man-down situations to tie the game going into period two, 3-3.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the second with DU taking the lead three times (4-3, 6-5, 7-6). However, Calvin didn't let up and tied the score at 7-7 with 2:26 remaining to end the first half.

The second half was much of the same. However, a 4-1 scoring run by the Panthers in the third quarter created the necessary momentum for the final period as a goal from Ashley (assist Trevor McDonald) with 1:01 remaining sealed the victory for DU.

Ashley led all scorers for a second-straight game with four, followed by three from Baker, two apiece from Ty Woods and Keelan McKouen, and one each from Luke Fritz and Dawson Gillette. Assist leaders included Poll, Baker, and Ashley (three each), as the Panthers won seven of the 27 faceoffs. Daniel Milano played all 60 minutes as the goalkeeper, making 13 saves in total.

Now 2-0 to start the season, DU will prepare for its home opener against Wheeling University on Saturday, Feb. 17, with the opening faceoff at 12 p.m. at the DU Turf Field.
