Panthers negate late comeback by Cardinals in 11-10 victory

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University men's lacrosse went down to the wire with Wheeling University in an 11-10 victory for the Panthers.

The back-and-forth battle unfolded in the early portions as Wheeling led 2-1 at the end of the first period. An unassisted goal by Braylon Baker at the 11:26 mark gave the Panthers an early lead, but the Cardinals responded a few minutes later (9:01), adding their second goal of the afternoon with 4:27 remaining.

DU responded in the second period, posting a 3-2 scoring advantage to knot the game at 5-5 heading into halftime. Two goals by Keelan McKouen (assists Dylan Day and Baker) and one goal apiece from Ty Woods and Luke Eichbauer swayed the momentum back in the Panthers' favor needed for their third-period push.

Outscoring the Cardinals 4-1 in the third followed by goals from Baker (assist Jayden Ashley), Dawson Gillette (assist McKouen), Ashley, and Luke Fritz (assist Ashley), DU's defense let up in the final period and almost led to a come-from-behind win by Wheeling. Going on a 4-2 scoring run, an eventual game-winning goal by Sean Ryan (assist Chase Post) at the 4:38 mark would give the Panthers a necessary 11-9 lead as the Cardinals would only score once more with 1:22 remaining in the game.

McKouen, Baker, and Eichbauer led all scorers with two apiece, as Daniel Milano's play in the goal saw eight saves made with nine goals allowed.

Now 3-0 to start the year, DU's home stand continues with a match against Malone on Wednesday, Feb. 28, with the opening faceoff at 12:00 p.m. at the DU Turf Field.
