HUDSONVILLE, Mich. - Davenport and Grand Valley State are no strangers on the ice as they met for the fifth time this season in the biggest game thus far in the quarterfinals of the GLCHL Tournament. The fifth-seed Panthers picked up a 2-1 win over the fourth-seed Lakers and got their second win over Grand Valley State this season. The Panthers improved to 20-13 overall and won for the third straight game to keep their season alive.
The contest was one of the cleanest of the season with just three penalties called.
Branwen Pollett for DU and Gage Thrall for GVSU had matching roughing minors at 8:42 of the first period. Nicklas Sommerfield gave Davenport the only power play of the game at 14:47 of the third period, but the Lakers killed off the penalty.
The goaltender matchup was
Kyler Lowden for the Panthers and Devin Naidow for the Lakers. Lowden showed poise for a freshman in net and made 29 saves. Naidow stopped 32 shots in the losing effort.
Davenport scored first at 4:02 of the second period as
Brendan Bauer notched his 16th goal of the season from
Kristers Klavins and
Jonathan Dubbink. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead at 13:54 of the third period as Klavins buried his 11th goal of the season from
Taber Gutschick and Bauer. The Lakers made a late surge as Zachary Borchardt scored his 11th of the season at 19:41 from Eric Hulford and Shane Haggerty.
Next up is a date against top-seed Adrian on neutral ice at Farmington Hills Ice Arena. The puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 PM tomorrow (Feb. 17) in the semifinals. The Panthers are looking to slay the giant as the Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in ACHA Division I and have beaten Davenport 17 straight times.
