Panthers Split Opening Day at Music City Invitational

SMYRNA, Tenn. - The Davenport University softball team opened the 2024 season 1-1, falling to Harding (1-0), before bouncing back and defeating Cedarville (3-0) at the Music City Invitational.

Game 1 vs. Harding
Result: L, 1-0
How it Happened
The season-opener was a low-scoring affair, as only one run scored between the two squads. The lone run for the Lady Bison came in the opening inning, taking the early 1-0 lead over the Panthers.

In the top of the third inning, DU had its best chance to tie the game, as the Panthers had the bases loaded after Raegan Smith was walked with two outs. However, on the ensuing at bat, Savanna Disbrow bombed one to deep center field, but it was caught to end the inning.

Riley Hasseld led the way for the Panthers, batting 2-for-3 to start the season. Becca Daoust ended with two hits, while Sophia Propps and Brooke Bernt each chipped in with one hit.

Davenport ended the game with seven hits, compared to nine for Harding.

Game 2 vs. Cedarville
Result: W, 3-0
How it Happened
Daoust opened up game two with a double to center field in the bottom of the first inning. Moments later, she was able to round the bases to score the first DU run of the year, propelling the Panthers to a 1-0 lead.

The Panther offense struck again in the third inning, as Hayley Kreiger hit an RBI double, bringing home Alexis Gills, scoring her first run in a Davenport uniform after being walked to start the inning.

Later in the inning, Disbrow singled to center field, which allowed Hasseld to reach home, giving DU a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

Defense was the highlight down the stretch, as the two teams only combined for just four hits through the final four innings.

Hailey Whisman picked up her first career victory in the circle for the Panthers. The freshman pitched the entire game, tossing three strikeouts and only allowing six hits in the win.

Offensively, Davenport finished with six hits from six different players; Kreiger, Propps, Daoust, Disbrow, Elisse Omey and Bernt.
