Panthers Complete Day Two of Music City Invitational

SMYRNA, Tenn. - The Davenport University softball team fell to Ashland and Northwood in its second day of action at the Music City Invitational at Cedar Stone Park. Both games were tightly contested, coming down to the wire in the final innings.

Game 1 vs. Ashland
Result: L, 7-5
How it Happened
The Panthers got off to a quick start offensively, racking up five runs in the first two innings while only giving up two.

Becca Daoust got things started in the first inning, as the lead-off batter laid down a bunt to reach first base. Moments later, with the bases loaded, Riley Hasseld recorded a single to bring home Daoust, giving DU the 1-0 advantage.

On the ensuing at-bat, Savanna Dsbrow notched a single, which led to both Hayley Kreiger and Sophia Propps reaching home following a fielding error by the Eagles.

In the second inning, Alexis Gills hit a triple to left-center field, bringing home Brooke Bernt and propelling the Davenport lead to 4-2. Kreiger recorded an RBI single down the left-field line on the ensuing at-bat and Gills reached home to extend the Panther lead to three (5-2).

With the score tied 5-5 heading into the sixth inning, Ashland scored two runs in the final two innings to edge Davenport.

Despite the loss, the Panthers recorded more hits (13) than the Eagle (11).

Kreiger led the way for DU, batting 3-for-four with one run and an RBI. Gills notched two hits, an RBI and a run in the loss for the Panthers. Disbrow and Elisse Omey each chipped in with a pair of hits.

Game 2 vs. Northwood
Result: L, 3-2
How it Happened
In another close game, the Panthers lost in heartbreaking fashion, giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Daoust was walked in the second inning with the bases loaded, which allowed Disbrow to reach home, giving Davenport the early 1-0 lead.

After Northwood tied the game 1-1 in the third inning, it was a stalemate late in the contest. DU broke the tie in the sixth inning, as Omey scored the go-ahead run following a single to center field by Gills.

However, with two outs and runners on second and third, the Timberwolves brought home both base runners with a single to center field.

Again, DU registered more hits than their opponent, finishing with 11 as opposed to eight for NU.

Daoust finished with two hits and an RBI for the Panthers in the loss. Liv Regenfuss added a pair of hits for Davenport, while Gills chipped in with a hit and an RBI.
