WLAX Preview: Ashland up next in Panthers' single-game weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Preparing for a single match this week, the Davenport University women's lacrosse team heads to Ohio for the first time since the 2021 season to face Ashland University.

The Panthers are coming off an eventful first week following a postponed second half against Thomas More and a 12-8 victory over Charleston, both on the road.

Blakely Malpass led all scorers in the team's victory over the Golden Eagles with three goals, followed by two apiece from Maddy Haynes, Gabby Basha, Theadora Krueger, and Mika Kulynych. Alyssa Bird also tallied a goal as goalkeeper Maisy Latus played all 60 minutes in the net and marked her 300th career save after posting 10 in the win.

Starting the year 1-0, it is still undetermined when the Thomas More game will resume as DU prepares for its third-straight road contest.

Ashland Matchup
Ashland is coming off a .500 season (9-9), 5-3 in the GMAC, as the 2023 campaign saw a program high in victories, conference and overall win percentage, and the most home wins. Third-year head coach Lauren Simko leads a promising group consisting of five All-GMAC returners: Cassady Becker, Rachel Crumbacher, Alexis Montalvo, Bri Doctor, and Madie Gash.

The Eagles are 0-1 to start the 2024 campaign following a 25-4 loss against then-No. 13 Maryville on Feb. 16. Becker and Crumbacher were two of the four scorers in the recent loss, with the remaining goals coming from Ashley Fisher and Sidney Voss.

Ahead of the loss, Ashland was selected to finish in a tie for second place in the GMAC Preseason Poll with Findlay University.

DU leads the all-time series record (3-0) against the Eagles, winning all three games by a margin of 22.5 goals on Ashland's home field. With the fourth game in program history back in Ohio, both sides are determined to improve their season record.
