Panthers Sweep Day Two of Blue Bridge Battle

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Davenport University softball team bounced back on day two of the Blue Bridge Battle at Deaconess Sports Park, getting victories over Walsh and Thomas More on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 24).

How it Happened
Following a scoreless opening four innings which featured just four hits combined, the Panthers scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Riley Hasseld opened the inning with a single, followed by a hit from Raegen Smith to put runners on first and second.

On the ensuing at-bat, Elisse Omey reached first on a fielder's choice and Hasseld was thrown out at third base. Sophia Propps then recorded a two-RBI single to left field to bring home Omey and Aaliyah Walker.

In the sixth inning, Propps reached home plate following a double to left field from Alexis Gills, boosting the Davenport lead to 3-0.

Cecelia Bell spent 5.2 innings in the circle, only allowing five hits and tossing one strikeout. Hailey Whisman finished out the final 1.1 innings, throwing one strikeout and allowing one hit.

Offensively, Becca Daoust ended the game with a pair of hits to go along with three stolen bases. Hasseld recorded two hits, while Gills, Savanna Disbrow, Smith, Omey, Propps and Brooke Bernt all registered a hit.

Game 2 vs. Thomas More
Result: W, 9-1
How it Happened
Game two was a dominating performance for DU, taking a commanding 6-0 lead in the first inning. Gills Started the game with a triple, followed by a single from Daoust on a bunt. Hayley Kreiger then stepped up to the plate and tripled to right center field to bring home both of the base runners.

On the ensuing at-bat, Kreiger reached home as Disbrow singled through the right side, setting the score at 3-0 in favor of DU. Hasseld and Disbrow scored the next two runs after a single by Propps and Liv Regenfuss scored the final run of the inning for the Panthers.

In the bottom of the third inning, Regenfuss and Hasseld reached home on a throwing error by the second baseman, growing the Panther lead to eight.

Omey brought home Krieger for the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as she hit a single. After a scoreless fifth inning, the game was ended due to the mercy rule.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Omey, recording two hits, a stolen base and an RBI. Propps finished with a hit and three RBIs, while Kreiger recorded a hit, two runs and two RBIs. 

In the circle, Kelsey Byers picked up her first win of the season, pitching all five innings and delivering five strikeouts while only allowing one hit.

The Panthers will conclude their time at the Blue Bridge Battle tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 25, taking on Findlay and Northwood.
