Panthers Suffer 88-61 Road Loss to Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell to Michigan Tech 88-61 on Thursday evening at the SDC Gymnasium. 

Marcedus Leech Jr. scored 14 points in the opening 10:24 to get the Panthers (9-18, 4-13 GLIAC) out to a 22-15 advantage following a three-pointer on a fastbreak. However, the Huskies (11-15, 8-9 GLIAC) answered with a 12-0 run to take a 27-22 lead with 5:49 remaining in the first half.

Trailing by 12 in the final moments of the first half, Leech Jr. converted a three-point play after being fouled on a layup to trim the DU deficit to nine heading into the break (41-32). 

Michigan Tech controlled most of the second half, growing its lead to as large as 35 and out-scoring Davenport by 18. The Huskies did the majority of their damage in the second half from behind the arc, shooting 10-for-20 (50 percent).

Leech Jr. led the way for DU with 21 points, three assists and two rebounds while shooting 9-for-16 from the floor. Myles Belyeu finished with 20 points for the Panthers, adding three rebounds and two assists. The 6-4 guard has now scored at least 17 points in each of his last five games. Jovan Tucker chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal in the loss.

The Panthers will conclude their regular season on Saturday (March 2) against Northern Michigan at 1 p.m. in Marquette, Mich.
