Panthers End Homestand with 82-65 Loss to GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball fell 82-65 on Saturday afternoon to crosstown rival Grand Valley State at the DU Student Center. Leading the way for the Panthers (8-12, 3-7 GLIAC) was Marcedus Leech Jr., who scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds while recording two steals and one block.

Leech Jr. knocked down a pair of free throws 6:46 into the contest to propel the Panthers to a one-point lead (12-11). However, that was the last lead of the contest for DU. A big part of that was a 16-2 run by the Lakers (9-11, 6-4 GLIAC) towards the backend of the half, helping them get out to a 15-point lead at the break.

Matas Deksnys nailed a pair of three-pointers to spur a 10-1 run, trimming the Panthers' deficit to eight with 14:46 remaining. GVSU answered, scoring 11 straight points over a 1:39 span.

A dunk from Leech Jr. with 5:48 left to play capped off an 11-0 run for DU, cutting the Laker lead to 12. It would not be enough, as Davenport failed to get back within single digits and Grand Valley State came away with the 17-point victory

Myles Belyeu finished with 17 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Panthers. Jeff Carrier ended with eight points and an assist, while Deksnys chipped in with six points off the bench.
