Leech Jr. Lights Up Cards in Overtime Victory

It was the first game in school history in which both teams scored over 100 points.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Marcedus Leech Jr. poured in a career-high 36 points to lead the Davenport University men's basketball team to a 108-103 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday evening (Feb. 8) at O'Neil Arena.

Leading by two in overtime with 1:25 remaining, Jovan Tucker blew past his defender for a driving layup on the right side of the basket to put the Panthers (9-12, 4-7 GLIAC) up by four (102-96). The junior guard scored on the ensuing possession on the same driving layup with his right hand, pushing the DU lead to six with 45 seconds on the clock.

A pair of made free throws from Matas Deksnys and Tucker, as well as a two-point basket from Jeff Carrier helped Davenport maintain its lead during the final 35 seconds.

After trailing heading into the second half, Leech Jr. scored seven consecutive points to tie the game with 9:53 remaining. Deksnys nailed a three-pointer to propel DU to its first lead of the second half (72-71) with just over nine minutes remaining.

The Cardinals (12-9, 5-7 GLIAC) had a chance to end the game late, but after inbounding the ball with four seconds remaining, Freddie McIntosh had the ball stripped by Tucker and the game was extended to overtime.

Myles Belyeu tied a season-high against his former school, dropping in 21 points while grabbing four boards and dishing out three assists. Tucker stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jaden Terrell ended the game with 11 points and six boards. Carrier and Deksnys each chipped in with 10 points for the Panthers.

All five of Davenport's starters ended the night in double figures (Leech Jr., Belyeu, Tucker, Terrell and Carrier).
