Panthers ride hot streak in victory over Lake Erie

Match single-season win tally as an NCAA DII program

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - An all-around showing of dominance by the Davenport University men's lacrosse team improving their record to 5-0 after a 13-5 victory over Lake Erie College.

"I've been really proud of how this team works," said head coach Chris Esquivel. "This is a very close group who play hard for each other. It's been very special coaching them."

DU led 3-1 at the end of the first period with an impressive 4-0 shutout in the second to tally a six-goal lead at halftime. Although the scoreboard seemed close, the defensive side for the Panthers disrupted a string of attacks by Lake Erie. Controlling the game's pace throughout the second half, DU outscored the Storm 3-2 in both the third and fourth periods to seal the victory.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak against the opponent, giving DU its first-ever win over the Storm in the all-time series (1-2).

Backed by Jayden Ashley and Luke Fritz's (career-high) three goals each, the Panthers add to a historic record for the program with five straight wins to start a season since joining NCAA Division II while on pace to surpass the program's best single-season record as a DII member.

Dylan Day (season-high) and Dawson Gillette (career-high) scored two goals each, followed by one each from Luke Eichbauer, Ty Woods, and Keelan McKouen - McKouen also added an assist to eclipse a recent accolade of 100 career points. Braylon Baker led the team's total of 43 groundballs with five of his own, with a team-high three caused turnovers by Kaden Seelye.

Daniel Milano played all 60 minutes as goalkeeper while making 16 saves to mark a .762 save percentage.

Up next, the Panthers are headed to Romeoville, Ill. to play Dominican (CA) in a neutral site contest on Tuesday, March 5.
