Panthers Sweep Dogs in Home Opener

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Hayley Kreiger combined for five hits, six RBIs and two home runs through two games to lead the Davenport University softball team to a pair of wins over Ferris State on Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

The home opening win came after three weeks off, having not played a game since Saturday, March 9 against Holy Family.

Game 1
Result: W, 12-5
How it Happened
Despite the long gap prior to their last game, the Panthers came out hot to start, putting up six runs in the first two innings.

Becca Daoust scored the opening run in first, as Savanna Disbrow hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring her home. Sophia Propps notched a double a few moments later, allowing Riley Hasseld to reach home plate, giving Davenport a 2-0 advantage.

The bats stayed hot for DU in the second inning, as Hasseld hit a monster two-RBI triple deep in the outfield to bring home Daoust and Brooke Bernt. On the ensuing at-bat, Hayley Kreiger sent the ball out of the park for a two-RBI homer, propelling the Panthers' lead to six.

In the top of the third, the Bulldogs put up a pair of runs to trim the Panthers lead to four. However, DU scored a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Daoust was the one to score the run as Hasseld hit the ball to left field but then was out on the play as she got run down as she was stuck between first and second base.

Leading 9-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Panther offense put three more runs on the board to push their advantage to seven. Kreiger, Alexis Gills and Elisse Omey were the three who reached home to help grow the lead.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Bernt fielded the ball in center field and threw a rocket to Omey at home plate, who tagged the runner and ended the game.

Kreiger finished with three hits, a home run, two RBIs and two runs to lead the way for the Panthers. Hasseld added three hits, three RBIs and two runs, while Daoust ended game one with three hits, three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases.

In the circle, Hailey Whisman picked up her fifth career win. The freshman pitched all seven innings, striking out four batters.

Game 2
Result: W, 9-5
How it Happened
The Panthers once again came out hot, scoring four runs in the first inning. Kreiger bombed her second home run of the day to push the Panthers to an early 3-0 lead. Gills capped off the inning with a run of her own to set the score at 4-0 in favor of Davenport.

Holding a 6-2 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth, Liv Regenfuss hit a double into deep center field, bringing home Omey and Disbrow, giving DU an 8-2 lead over FSU.

After getting on base with a double to left field, Propps scored the final run of the day off another double from Regenfuss.

Regenfuss finished with the best game of her young career, notching three hits (season and game highs), with three RBIs and two doubles. Kreiger ended the game with two hits, four RBIs and a run. Daoust, Hasseld and Bernt all chipped in with two hits in the win for Davenport.

In the circle, freshman Cecelia Bell picked up her third win of the season for DU. The Freshman struck out five batters while pitching all seven innings.
