DU Drops Pair of Games to #9 GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team dropped two games to No. 9 Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Softball Field.

Game 1
Result: L, 10-1 (6 inn.)
How it Happened
Davenport had a chance to strike early in the contest, getting the bases loaded in the top of the second. However, the Panthers were not able to convert and the Lakers responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 5-0 lead.

In the third, Hayley Kreiger Answered with a solo home run over the left-field fence to trim the DU deficit to four (5-1).

After scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, Davenport again put itself in striking position in the top of the sixth. The Panthers loaded the bases with one out, which was sparked by a double to center field by Alexis Gills. However, GVSU struck out consecutive batters to get out of the inning still holding its four-point advantage.

Grand Valley closed out the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kreiger, Gills, Riley Hasseld and Liv Regenfuss all recorded a hit in the loss for the Panthers. In the circle for Davenport, Hailey Whisman pitched all six innings, delivering four strikeouts.

Game 2
Result: L, 2-1
How it Happened
The Lakers struck first in the bottom of the first to take the early 2-0 lead in game two. However, the Panthers' defense was stout for the remainder of the game, only allowing four hits through the remaining five innings.

Davenport put its first run of the game on the board in the top of the fifth. Regenfuss hit a double to deep center field to get the inning going. Moments later, Brooke Bernt hit the ball to the opposing pitcher, who then threw her out at first, allowing Regenfuss to reach home.

Kreiger, Gills, Regenfuss and Bernt all recorded hits for DU in the game two loss. In the circle, Cecelia Bell pitched all six innings, striking out three batters.

Up Next
The Panthers will return to action tomorrow against Wayne State for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
