Panthers Split Day Two at Space Coast Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Davenport University softball team split its second day at the Space Coast Games, defeating Mercy before falling to nationally ranked Nova Southeastern on Friday evening at the USSSA Space Coast Complex.

How it Happened
The Panthers dominated the start of the game, getting out to an 11-0 lead by the bottom of the fourth inning.

A sacrifice fly from Savanna Disbrow allowed Becca Daoust to reach home plate for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.

DU had a monster fifth inning, scoring five runs to expand its lead to 6-0. Alexis Gills got the scoring started, as Liv Regenfuss brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field. Daoust drove home Kaycee Loehr with a single up the middle. Hayley Kreiger capped off the inning with a three-run home run, bringing home Daoust and Brooke Bernt to close out the massive inning for the Panthers.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the third, the Panthers brought in four more runs in the fourth as Disbrow, Hasseld, Propps and Gills all reached home plate.

In the circle for Davenport, freshman Cecelia Bell pitched 4.2 innings, delivering a career-high seven strikeouts.

How it Happened
Coming down to the wire, the game was tied 2-2 heading into the last inning, but the Sharks clinched the game in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run with two outs on the board.

The Panthers scored the first run of the game in the third inning as Kreiger drove in Bernt. On the ensuing at-bat, Disbrow singled to center field and Daoust scored to put DU up 2-0 over NSU.

Despite the loss, the Panthers registered more hits (8) than the Sharks (7).

Hailey Whisman and Kelsey Byers split time in the circle for the Panthers, combining for three strikeouts in the contest.

Bernt led the way offensively for the Panthers with two hits and a run, while Hasseld registered a pair of hits.

Up Next
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow (March 9) for their final day at the Space Coast Games, taking on Cedarville (10 a.m.) and Holy Family (2:30 a.m.) at the USSSA Space Coast Complex.
