Panthers Split with Conference-Leading Cardinals

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team split with Saginaw Valley State, who is currently first in the conference standings, on Wednesday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

Game 1
Result: L, 8-0 (5 Inn.)
How it Happened
The Cardinals (21-14, 8-4 GLIAC) opened the game with four runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Panthers (12-18, 4-4 GLIAC) put themselves in striking position, following a single from Savanna Disbrow to load the bases. However, DU could not bring the runs home and trailed 4-0 heading into the second inning.

Trailing 6-0 heading into the fifth, Davenport allowed a pair of runs and then went scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the mercy rule came into play as they were down by eight after five.

Becca Daoust led the way offensively for the Panthers, batting 2-for-3 in the loss. Disbrow and Riley Hasseld also added a hit for the Panthers.

In the circle, Cecelia Bell and Kelsey Byers split time pitching for DU.

Game 2
Result: W, 4-2
How it Happened
SVSU transfer Alexis Gills came up clutch in her first matchup against her former squad. The third baseman drilled a two-run home run out of left field in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the 2-2 tie late.

Leading 4-2, the Davenport defense did its part, not allowing a single hit in the final two innings. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Hailey Whisman struck out Sydney Herioux to ice the game.

Hasseld scored the opening run of the game for the Panthers in the bottom of the first, as Propps singled with the bases loaded to bring her home.

Brooke Bernt scored the second run for DU in the second inning, reaching home from second following a single to left field from Hasseld.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Gills with a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Hayley Kreiger batted a perfect 2-for-2 with a double for DU while reaching home once. Raegen Smith chipped in with a pair of hits as well in the victory for Davenport.

Whisman spent all seven innings in the circle for the Panthers, delivering three strikeouts and only allowing five hits.
