WLAX Preview: DU hosts Bears, Wildcats for pair of league games

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University women's lacrosse enters the final stretch of the regular season, with two of the last three games played this weekend.

Previously scheduled for a two-game week in their last time out, the Panthers played just one matchup between Apr. 9-14 after the Grand Valley State matchup was postponed. DU fell 18-10 at home to Quincy on Apr. 9 to cap off non-conference play with a 5-3 record.

Maddy Haynes is t-No. 5 in the conference with 31 goals, and Gabby Basha is fourth overall for assists total (16). Theadora Krueger is No. 4 in the GLIAC for draw controls (51), as Maisy Latus is second in saves with 106.

The Panthers (5-5 overall) are still looking for their first league victory of the season, currently maintaining a 0-2 record as a pair of matchups at home could play an advantage.

Northern Matchup
Northern Michigan University was selected to finish No. 2 in the GLIAC Preseason Poll and is receiving votes in this week's IWLCA Poll for the first time this season. The Wildcats are riding a two-game win streak with an overall record of 11-3 (2-1 GLIAC).

Falling 11-10 to GVSU in the 2023 GLIAC Championship, the Wildcats have already tied their win tally from the previous season while on pace to surpass the mark following a 21-12 victory against Concordia, St. Paul in their most recent game.

Minnie Bittell maintains her top position in the conference for goals (59) and assists (25), her goal total placing her at No. 9 in the NCAA Division II leaderboards. Behind Bittell are Josie Lakosky (35 goals, 10 assists, 13 caused turnovers), Kaitlyn Bridger (27 goals), and Laine Stanton (25 goals) to round out a juggernaut offensive attack. Lauren Esposito has played in all 14 games while making 12 starts, her 86 saves being the third-highest in the GLIAC.

The Wildcats have won three straight games against the Panthers to improve the all-time series record to 8-4, with DU holding the historical advantage with hopes to snap their losing skid.

Concordia Matchup (Senior Day)
Coming into this week on a two-game losing streak, Concordia has four chances (including GLIAC Tournament Semifinals) to surpass last year's total wins as their current 6-8 record ties the 2023 mark.

The Bears are 1-2 in the conference after being selected to finish third overall in the GLIAC Preseason Poll. Their sole win came against the Panthers on Apr. 5, taking the 18-15 victory in Minnesota to improve the all-time series to 9-4 against DU.
Susie Monson leads the team with 34 goals (t-third GLIAC) and 19 assists (third GLIAC) while maintaining a .821 shot-on-goal percentage. Anna Fisher and Cayla Jungwirth add to the Bears' offensive attack with 28 and 23 goals, respectively. On defense, Claire Flahaven is t-No. 4 in the country for caused turnovers (42) while leading the conference, as Marge Lucio has seen the most action at goalkeeper with 109 saves and a 12.62 goals-against average.

Apr. 19 will round out the week for both Concordia and the Panthers in Grand Rapids for DU's Senior Day game.
