WLAX Preview: Oilers up next with league play to follow

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - With a non-conference opponent forthcoming and league action on the horizon, the Davenport University women's lacrosse team is slated for a three-game week at home and on the road.

The Panthers are riding a two-game winning streak after defeating McKendree (10-6) and Lewis University (14-10) in their recent matchups.

Maddy Haynes' strong performances between the victories tallied eight goals and two assists, with a career-high five goals scored in the win over Lewis - placing her in a tie for No. 10 in the GLIAC for total goals. Brianna Rodriguez matched her career-high in single-game goals (three) to tally five overall, as Theadora Krueger (five) and Blakely Malpass (three) recorded three goals or more in the pair of matches. Gabby Basha also posted six assists between the wins (three each) as a go-to orchestrator on offense.

As a unit, the Panthers posted 22 caused turnovers, 52 groundballs, and were 25 of 47 in draw controls; Krueger (tied No. 6) and Rodriguez (No. 10) in the top 10 of the conference for draw control wins. Maisy Latus made 24 saves between the games while marking the lowest number of goals allowed this season in the McKendree win.

Nearing the .700 mark for win percentage at 4-2 overall, DU looks to open the week with a win at home ahead of their two-game road trip that starts conference play.

Findlay Matchup
The all-time series between the Panthers and Oilers sits at 2-2, with Findlay taking last season's meeting 19-10 in Ohio. Selected to finish in a tie for second in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, the Oilers look to make a run at a title after finishing as the GMAC Championship runner-up in 2023.

2023 Freshman of the Year Tessa Chuba (32 goals) and First Team All-GMAC honoree Madeline Shewbridge (29 goals, 19 assists) have matched single-season career totals as two-way juggernauts for Findlay this year, with Chuba leading the conference with 3.20 goals per contest and Shewbridge in third for points per contest (4.36).

Olivia Bakowski is tied No. 12 in the country for total saves with 101 - No. 25 for saves per game (9.18) - with Chuba sitting at first (5.50) and third (1.90) in draw controls and caused turnovers per contest in the GMAC, respectively.

Currently second in the conference standings, Apr. 2 is the start of a three-game week for Findlay as the team's most recent 17-4 win over Malone improved their season record to 6-5 overall (1-1 GMAC).

Concordia-St. Paul Matchup
The Bears were pegged at No. 3 in the GLIAC Preseason Poll as Concordia opens league play at home following a 16-12 loss to Rockhurst on March 24. Now 5-6 overall, the team's two-game homestand this weekend marks the start of the Bears' conference schedule.

Concordia swept the 2023 series (2-0) against DU to improve the all-time record to 8-4 in their favor, now given a home pitch advantage to start the 2024 series.

2023 First Team All-GLIAC honoree Claire Flahaven leads the GLIAC with 35 groundballs and 29 caused turnovers, tying her for the third-highest caused turnovers average (3.18) in the NCAA Division II. Marge Lucio's 67 saves in 10 games gives her a .403 save percentage with a 10.64 goals-against average.

Offensively, 2023 Second Team All-GLIAC Susie Monson's team-high 30 goals and 14 assists place her at the top of the conference leaderboards for second and third, respectively. Cayla Jungwirth (19 goals, 12 assists), Anna Fisher (21 goals, six assists), and Hailey Hartlage (13 goals, 10 assists) round out a layered unit.

Northern Michigan Matchup
Ahead of weekend play for a pair of home games, 2023 GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient and First Team All-GLIAC honoree Minnie Bittell is currently No. 5 in NCAA DII for goals per game (4.64) and total goals (51) - a standout leader for the GLIAC for goal total - and No. 6 in the country for points per game (6.18) while shooting 84 of 97 overall.

Josie Lakosky (24), 2023 First Team All-GLIAC honoree Kaitlyn Bridger (19), and Laine Stanton (17) join Bittell as go-to scorers for the Wildcat offense as the team maintains a 9-2 record, the team riding a four-game winning streak. Defensively, 2023 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Dayna Carlson and Natalie Thomas lead Northern with 11 caused turnovers, as Lauren Esposito has served as the primary goalkeeper while posting 69 saves on an 8.76 goals-against average.

Projected to finish second in the GLIAC Preseason Poll, the Wildcats prepare to maintain their two-game winning streak against DU as the historical record is 8-3 in favor of the Panthers.
