Panthers Fall to Lakers in Home Doubleheader

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team started off the weekend with a pair of losses to No. 18 Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

Game 1
Result: L, 7-0
How it Happened
The Lakers (28-13, 11-7 GLIAC) did most of their damage in the first inning, putting up four runs to start the contest.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the third inning, the Panthers (13-25, 5-11 GLIAC) put themselves in scoring positions, loading the bases. Kaycee Loehr started the inning with a double to center field, while Brooke Bernt was walked in the following at-bat. Moments later with two outs, Hayley Kreiger was hit by a pitch and Davenport found itself with an opportunity to put runs on the board.

However, DU could not capitalize and GVSU came out of the inning still holding the Panthers scoreless.

Becca Daoust, Alexis Gills and Loehr all ended the game with a hit for the Panthers. Cecelia Bell and Hailey Whisman split time in the circle for Davenport, each recording one strikeout.

Game 2
Result: L, 7-2
How it Happened
Liv Regenfuss had her best game as a Panther, as the freshman hit the first home run of her career. The Shepard, Mich. native bombed a two-run home run to left field in the second inning to knot the game at two apiece.

Grand Valley State responded with one run in the ensuing inning, regaining a one-run advantage.

However, in the bottom of the third, Daoust and Riley Hasseld each knocked a single for the Panthers. Kreiger then laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving the two base runners to second and third with two outs. With a chance to tie the game back up, Davenport couldn't bring either of the two runners home.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Regenfuss, batting a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored off the homer. Daoust and Hasseld each added a pair of hits for DU, while Gills chipped in with one hit.

In the circle for DU, Alayna Pinkelman and Kelsey Byers split time, combining for three strikeouts.

Up Next
The Panthers will play in their fourth doubleheader in six days on Sunday, April 21, in University Center, Mich taking on Saginaw Valley State at noon at the SVSU Softball Complex.
