Panthers Suffer Two Losses to Conclude the Weekend

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team concluded the weekend with a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (13-27, 5-13 GLIAC) dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Cardinals (27-18, 14-8 GLIAC).

Game 1
Result: L, 3-0
How it Happened
It was a defensive battle between the two squads in game one of the doubleheader. The only runs of the game were scored in the second inning from SVSU.

In the top of the sixth, Riley Hasseld singled to left field to put runners on first and second. In the ensuing at-bat, Hayley Kreiger was walked, and the Panthers had the bases loaded with a chance to trim the three-run deficit. However, DU could not bring the runners home, and SVSU took game one by a narrow three-run advantage.

Hailey Whisman and Cecelia Bell split time in the circle for Davenport, as the duo combined for four strikeouts through seven innings of action.

Game 2
Result: L, 4-2 (9 Inn.)
How it Happened
In another defensive battle, the game was deadlocked at two runs apiece after seven, forcing extra innings.

Saginaw Valley State put their first run of the game on the board in the first inning, getting out to the 1-0 lead. Davenport tied the game 1-1 in the fourth as a double from Kreiger brought home Hasseld.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Cards quickly responded, scoring a run and going back on top by one (2-1).

Sophia Propps answered for DU to start the fifth, hitting a double to left field. After advancing to third base on a passed ball, Elisse Omey had a sacrifice fly to bring Propps home and again tie the game 2-2.

Hasseld, Becca Daoust, Kreiger, Alexis Gills and Propps all notched a hit in the loss for the Panthers. Kelsey Byers spent all 8.2 innings in the circle for DU, only allowing three earned runs during that span.

Up Next
The Panthers will look to bounce back on Wednesday (April 24) as they will head to Detroit, Mich. for a doubleheader with Wayne State at 3:30 p.m.
