Panthers Start Week with a Split in Motor City

DETROIT, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team split with Wayne State on Wednesday (April 24) afternoon at the Gary L. Bryce Field. It was the first of three doubleheaders to begin the final week of the regular season for the Panthers (14-28, 6-14 GLIAC).

Game 1
Result: L, 7-4
How it Happened
Davenport scored the first run of the day in the first inning to take the 1-0 lead out of the gate. Becca Daoust started the game with a single and was later brought home on a sacrifice fly by Savanna Disbrow.

The Warriors (16-27, 8-14 GLIAC) responded with runs in the second and third innings, taking a 3-1 lead in the contest.

Trailing 7-1 heading into the seventh, the Panthers were able to get the offense going, starting the final inning with four consecutive hits. Riley Hasseld scored the first run of the inning off a hit from Alexis Gills. On the ensuing at-bat, Disbrow doubled to right center field, bringing home two more runs and trimming the deficit to three (7-4).

Wayne State then made a pitching change, checking Sasha Buckberger into the game, as she then walked Sophia Propps but then struck out three consecutive batters to end the game.

Hasseld led the Panthers' offense, batting 3-for-4 with one run. Hayley Kreiger finished with two hits and a run, while Disbrow added two hits and three RBIs for DU.

Kelsey Byers and Alayna Pinkelman split time in the circle for the Panthers, combining for five strikeouts and only allowing two earned runs.

Game 2
Result: W, 2-1
How it Happened
In a low-scoring affair, the Panthers bounced back in game two with a victory behind a stellar defensive effort.

Similar to game one, Davenport jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, following a two-run home run from Gills.

Those two runs would be all the Panthers needed to take home the win, with the defense held strong for seven innings, only allowing one run in the fifth. Both squads finished the game with five hits.

Daoust ended the game with three hits and one run scored for the Panthers. Gills finished with one hit, two RBIs and a run scored.

In the circle for the Panthers was Hailey Whisman, delivering two strikeouts while pitching all seven innings. The freshman now has eight wins on the year, which leads the team.

Up Next
The Panthers will head to Kenosha, Wis. for their final road game of the 2024 regular season on Friday, taking on Parkside at 4 p.m. EST at the Case Softball Complex.
