WLAX Preview: Panthers face Lakers in final stretch of regular season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Nearing the end of the regular season, the Davenport University women's lacrosse team is slated for two games against No. 8 Grand Valley State on Apr. 26 and Apr. 29 ahead of postseason action.

The Panthers improved to 6-6 this season (1-3 GLIAC) after a 12-9 victory over Concordia, St. Paul on Senior Day.

Backed by Theadora Krueger's four goals, DU tallied its first conference win since 2022. Blakely Malpass (three), Maddy Haynes (two), Brianna Rodriguez, Gabby Basha, and Alyssa Bird (once each) contributed to the scoring total. Haynes is now five points away from hitting a career milestone of 100 points.

Jade Remacle and Haynes led the defense with three and five caused turnovers, respectively, as Maisy Latus recorded eight saves while facing 21 shots, her 118 saves keeping her at No. 2 in the GLIAC.

Snapping a four-game skid on Apr. 21, the Panthers look to make program history against a long-time opponent ahead of the 2024 GLIAC Tournament.

GVSU Matchup
The Lakers are ranked No. 8 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll for the third straight week with a 13-1 overall (3-0 GLIAC) - the sole loss came against then-No. 12 Maryville on March 6.

GVSU's .929 win percentage is the sixth-best in NCAA Division II, as the team maintains the best scoring defense (4.79) and draw control percentage (.629) in the country.

Maddy Champagne is a two-time GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week this season after receiving the honor again this week, leading the Lakers in goals (39) and shot-on-goal percentage (.827). Behind her are teammates Sydney Stone (37 goals), Hailey Crittenden (31 goals), and Delaney Smith (20 goals, 21 assists).

Defensively, Kaylyn Cater's 4.69 goals allowed per contest and .544 save percentage are the first and third-best marks in NCAA DII, respectively - leading the conference in each category. Most recently named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, Cater has made 13 starts while appearing in all 14 games. Three-time D.P.O.W. Aislynn Alkire is another force on defense, sitting in the top three of the team leaderboard for caused turnovers (19) and groundballs (30).

The Lakers lead the all-time series 16-1 against DU while riding a 15-game winning streak ahead of this weekend.
