Softball Picks Up 500th Win in Program History

CALEDONIA, Mich. - After winning the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader against Wayne State, the Davenport University softball team now sits at 500 victories in program history. In its 16th year, the program has an overall record of 500-277 since its inaugural season in 2009. Of those 500 victories, 354 came at the NAIA level, while 146 have come during their time playing in NCAA Division II.

Game 1
Result: W, 3-2 (10 Inn.)
How it Happened
Trailing by one in extra innings (10th), Sophia Propps stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second. The freshman delivered in a big way, as she singled through the left side to bring both Savanna Disbrow and Alexis Gills home, as DU came away with the one-point victory.

In the seventh inning, trailing 1-0, Brooke Bernt singled to second base and eventually scored the game-tying run to send it to extra innings.

Defensively, Disbrow played lights out at the shortstop position, making big plays on three separate occasions which required her to jump or dive to get the outs for the Panthers (11-17, 3-3 GLIAC).

Propps led the way for Davenport, batting 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Gills added a pair of hits and a run, while Hasseld batted 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

In the circle, Cecilia Bell picked up her fourth win of the season. The freshman delivered one strikeout through 5.1 innings pitched.

Game 2
Result: L, 11-5
How it Happened
After a defensive battle in game one, the two teams combined for 27 hits in the latter half of the doubleheader.

Following a run from the Warriors (12-17, 4-4 GLIAC) in the top of the first, the Panther immediately responded. Gills came through with a hit to the left side with runners on first and second to bring home Hasseld and tie the ball game at one apiece.

However, Wayne State put together a big third inning, bringing home five runs to take a 6-1 lead over Davenport.

Gills answered in the bottom of the third yet again for the Panthers, hitting a bomb to center field which brought home Disbrow. On the ensuing play, Gills scored a run of her own after a single from Propps.

The Panthers were able to bring it within two runs (6-4) in the fifth inning, but the Warriors blew their lead back open in the sixth with five more runs.

Leading the way for DU was Gills, who had arguably her best game in a Panther uniform, finishing with three hits two doubles, two RBIs and a run. Propps tallied two hits, two RBIs and a double for Davenport. Bernt chipped in with a double and one run scored for the Panthers.

The Panthers will remain home for a doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday (April 10) at 3 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Mich.
