GLIAC Tournament Preview: Panthers aim for first title in program history

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Wrapping up the regular season earlier this week, the Davenport University women's lacrosse team is in action this weekend with intentions to claim the 2024 GLIAC Tournament title.

The Panthers fell 9-4 to No. 7 Grand Valley State University on Apr. 29, dropping their conference record to 1-5 overall and placing them in the fourth seed for the postseason tournament.

Blakely Malpass led DU with two goals (three groundballs), followed by one from Brianna Rodriguez and Theadora Krueger (three caused turnovers, three draw controls). Maisy Latus recorded 10 saves in the loss, her ninth game this year tabbing double-digit saves.

Latus maintains her top spot in the conference leaderboards with 141 total saves and is second for save percentage (.467). Maddy Haynes remains in the top 10 of the GLIAC (No. 6) for goal total with 37, with Krueger's 60 draw controls tying her for third in the conference.

Riding a two-game skid, the Panthers look for their third GLIAC Championship appearance in four seasons for the chance of securing the first conference title since joining the GLIAC.

GVSU Matchup
Ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II, the Lakers finished the regular season with a perfect 6-0 conference record (15-1 overall) while riding an 11-game win streak as they look to add to their three-peat of tournament titles dating back to the 2021 season.

Both twice-named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week this year, Maddy Champagne and Sydney Stone are deadlocked at 43 goals to lead the team. The pair also lead in groundballs and draw controls, Champagne with 40 and 50 and Stone with 38 and 53, respectively. Hailey Crittenden (35 goals, 14 caused turnovers) and Delaney Smith (21 goals, 24 assists) are catalysts on both ends.

The Laker scoring defense is still No. 1 in NCAA DII by nearly two points (4.63), with their .667 draw control percentage tied for first in the nation. GVSU's .513 save percentage and 4.63 goals allowed are the best marks in the GLIAC.

This will be the third consecutive game played between the Panthers and Lakers in seven days, with DU attempting to improve the 1-18 historical record.
