Panthers Sweep Pioneers in 2024 Home Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team swept Glenville State on Thursday (Sept. 12) night in the 2024 home opener. Thursday's matchup between the two squads marked the first game of the Hampton Inn and Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic, which is being hosted by DU and Grand Valley State University.

After back-and-forth action to start the first set, the Panthers (2-3, 0-0 GLIAC), went on a 6-2 rally to gain a five-point advantage over the Pioneers (1-5, 0-0 MEC). During that stretch to get out to a 17-2 advantage, Rachel Youngblood had a pair of kills to help spur the run. GSU pulled back within three points (18-15),  but DU answered with a 5-1 run, set in motion by a kill from Abby Alan off a Savannah Hall assist. Davenport took the set on an attack error by the Pioneers, taking the 1-0 advantage in the match following the 25-18 victory.

In the second set, the Panthers jumped out to a 5-1 lead as Emma Turnquist led the charge early with two kills. Moments later, DU put together a 6-0 rally, which was capped by a kill from Alan off a Hall assist, to give Davenport a nine-point advantage (12-3). Holding a 23-13 lead late, Turnquist ended the set with a kill followed by a service ace to put GSU away and put the Panthers ahead 2-0 in the match.

Back-to-back service aces from Ashley Arceo to start the third set spurred a 4-0 rally by Davenport. After Glenville State responded with a four-point rally of their own, Davenport scored four consecutive points, starting with a kill from Kynadi Dole as they held an 8-4 edge. With the set continuing back-and-forth and the score set at 22 apiece, the Panthers scored three consecutive points to take down the Pioneers and secure the sweep. Alan ended the set with a pair of service aces, which clinched the match.

It was a well-rounded attack for DU, which saw 15 players step on the floor. Leading the way was Turnquist with 10 kills and a .227 hitting percentage. Alan added nine kills and four service aces, while Youngblood chipped in with seven kills and a team-high 11 digs. Hall and Mehl Hansen each added 10 assists in the win for Davenport.
