Hot Shooting Not Enough as Panthers Fall to Rangers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell 72-64 Saturday afternoon to Parkside at the DU Student Center.

Despite the loss, the Panthers shot the ball at a 49 percent clip, their highest percentage this season of any conference game. From deep, DU shot 41.2 percent, also marking the highest percentage of any of its conference matchups this season.

Jovan Tucker notched his seventh game this season with at least 20 points, pouring in a team-high 24 to lead the Panthers (5-13,  1-9 GLIAC) while grabbing three boards and dishing out two assists.

DU opened the contest trailing by 15 (22-7), Tucker and Raishaun Brown each nailed a triple on ensuing possessions to trim the deficit to single digits (22-13). A layup from Matyas Vrabel with six minutes remaining in the half spurred a 7-0 Davenport run, setting the score at 29-23 in favor of the Rangers (). 

After entering the break down by four, the Panthers put together a 10-0 run in the opening stages of the second half. Vrabel capped the run with a layup off a feed from Joey Cabana and DU gained their first lead of the game (37-34).

However, an 11-3 Parkside rally put the Rangers up by nine (55-46) with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Panthers did pull back within three (63-60) with 4:14 remaining after Alden Ritt drilled a three from the top of the key, but the Panthers were unable to regain the lead.

Dylan Smith finished the afternoon with 10 points, five rebounds and an assist for the Panthers. Brown added 10 points, seven boards, four assists and two steals for DU. Vrabel chipped in with eight points and three boards in the loss.

The Panthers will take their annual trip to Michigan's upper peninsula, Heading to Michigan Tech on Thursday (Jan. 30) and Northern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 1).
