Panthers Split Opening Day at Midwest Regional Crossover

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport women's volleyball team secured a decisive 3-0 victory over the Eagles on Friday at Hammond Sportsplex, before falling to Missouri-St. Louis 3-0 in its second match.

How it Happened
The first set began with DU establishing an early lead, starting with a kill by Amelia Werner set by Madison Berry. The Panthers continued to capitalize on the Eagles errors, with Kaitlin Jordan and Sydney Swan adding key points to build a 7-3 advantage. A service error briefly halted momentum, but the Panthers swiftly regained control as Swan delivered a kill to extend the lead to 10-5. With consistent assists from Berry, Abby Alan and Werner added crucial points. The set concluded with Davenport's defensive efforts holding firm, highlighted by a block from Jordan and Berry, securing a 25-13 finish and DU taking a 1-0 advantage.

Davenport began the second set with a strong showing from Swan and Jordan, each securing crucial kills that helped the team recover from an early deficit. Berry continued setting up plays, assisting on multiple kills to keep the momentum on Davenport's side. A pivotal moment came when Werner and Livi Overbeek combined for a block, contributing to a 5-point run that extended Davenport's lead to 13-8. As the set progressed, the Panthers capitalized on the Eagles' errors, with Hayley Carr delivering a service ace and Jordan continuing to tally points. Jordan capped the set with a service ace, and Werner closed it with a decisive kill, securing the set for Davenport at 25-14.

In the third set, Jordan contributed significantly with service aces, helping push the DU lead to 17-12.Despite Ashland closing the gap with their own scoring efforts, Davenport maintained their edge. Livi Overbeek's block and Swan's late kills extended the lead, ensuring Davenport's position. The set concluded with a 25-20 victory for Davenport, solidifying their advantage in the match.

Jordan led the Panthers with 12 kills and a career-high five aces, contributing significantly to her 18.5 total points. Berry facilitated the offense with 35 assists, while Sydney Swan added 11 kills and contributed eight digs. Maggie Juncaj played a key defensive role, collecting a team-high 14 digs.

How it Happened
Despite Davenport's efforts in the opening set, including a service ace from Swan pushing the lead briefly to 12-10, the Tritons capitalized on a series of plays to go ahead 19-13.The Tritons closed the set with a series of service aces and kills, extending their lead. Davenport managed to score some late points, including a block by Werner and Livi Overbeek, but could not overcome the deficit, ending the set with a 25-16 score in favor of the Tritons.

Davenport started the second set with a strong offensive push, quickly establishing a 3-0 lead with kills from Werner, Overbeek and Swan. However, the Tritons responded with a run, capitalizing on Davenport's errors to tie the game at 6-6. Kills from Karley Pretzer and Swan pushed DU to a slight edge at 8-6. The teams continued to exchange points, keeping the score tight at 12-12. Despite efforts from Jordan and Swan, the Tritons regained control, eventually pulling ahead 17-15.The Tritons pushed ahead to a 22-16 lead, with Davenport struggling to close the gap. A late kill by Werner added to DU's tally, but the Tritons closed the set with a 25-17 win, securing the set with a final service ace.

Davenport began the third set with early kills by Werner and Swan, tying the score 2-2. Midway through the set, Davenport made a push, with Morgan Tydings and Juncaj contributing key blocks to level the score at 7-7. As the set neared its conclusion, Davenport continued to battle with a service ace from Carr and a few more kills from Jordan and Werner. Ultimately, the Tritons closed the set 25-18.

Werner led the Panthers with a hitting percentage of .750, recording seven kills on eight attempts. Berry facilitated the offense with 19 assists and contributed defensively with eight digs. Swan added two service aces and collected seven kills. Hayley Carr provided support with eight digs and three assists.
