Panthers Get Back in Win Column, Sweeping Roosevelt

CHICAGO - The Davenport University women's volleyball swept Roosevelt in three sets on Friday at Goodman Center, winning 25-15, 25-14, 30-28, behind a strong blocking performance with 12 total blocks.

Davenport started the first set with strong offensive play, quickly establishing momentum with a series of kills from Madison Berry and Kaitlin Jordan. The team capitalized on Roosevelt's errors, including a pivotal block by Morgan Tydings and Jordan, to extend their lead to 6-1 early in the set. As the set progressed, the Panthers (7-5, 4-1 GLIAC) maintained their advantage through consistent performances from Abby Alan and Karley Pretzer, each contributing key kills, while Berry provided valuable assists. Despite some pushback from the Lakers (1-13, 0-5 GLIAC), Davenport sustained their lead. The set concluded with Davenport sealing a 25-15 victory, underscored by Pretzer's decisive kills in the closing points.

The Panthers began set two capitalizing on an early attack error by Roosevelt's Jessica Maier, establishing momentum. Jordan and Alan contributed key kills, and a block by Jordan and Berry extended Davenport's lead to 4-2. The team maintained pressure with consistent scoring, including a series of attack errors from the Laker's Abigail Wutka, creating a 13-7 advantage for DU. Berry facilitated several successful plays, assisting Alan and Tydings in expanding the lead to 16-9. Roosevelt briefly responded with a pair of kills, but Davenport quickly regained control with a kill by Pretzer and effective blocks from Tydings and Amelia Werner. Closing set two, Davenport surged to a 25-14 victory with a decisive kill by Werner and an error from Vivienne Merchant.

Set three featured a tense exchange of leads between Davenport and Roosevelt. Davenport quickly established a 2-0 lead with a kill by Livi Overbeek and a block by Werner, setting the tone for a competitive set. Though Roosevelt briefly took the lead, Davenport's defensive efforts, including key blocks by Jordan and Pretzer, reclaimed momentum. As the set progressed, Tydings and Sydney Swan contributed critical kills to keep the score tight. The set saw both teams trading points, pushing the score to a 24-24 tie, with neither side able to pull away. Ultimately, Davenport edged ahead with decisive plays from Swan and Berry, capturing the set 30-28 and maintaining their competitive stance in the match.

Alan led the Panthers offense with nine kills while hitting .364. Tydings and Pretzer each chimed in with eight kills apiece, while Jordan finished with five kills and blocks. Berry led the way in the assist category, finishing with 27. Defensively, Julia Frederick had a team-high 14 digs.  

Looking ahead, the Panthers travel to Kenosha, Wis., to face Parkside. The matchup is set for Saturday, Oct. 4, with the first serve at 3 p.m.
