GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The rivalry between Davenport and Grand Valley State on the ice continued this past weekend as the Lakers found a way to win both games by just a single goal. The Friday night result was 3-2 at GVSU's home ice of Griff's Georgetown in Hudsonville. The Saturday game at Patterson Ice Center went into overtime and the Lakers prevailed 2-1. Both games were very well played and defensive minded.
The Panthers found themselves having to dig out of a hole on Friday as GVSU scored the first three goals. Brendan Kelley and Yarne Vaerewyck scored at even-strength in the first period and GVSU held a 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Kamryn Hellman scored on the power play at 7:42 of the second period as Ethan Hellman and Chase Tallaire had an assist. Much like previous games this season, DU battled back and scored twice before the end of the second period.
Taber Gutschick scored his second goal of the season on the power play at 10:17 from
Brendan Bauer. The Lakers took another penalty and
Ryder McMillen made them pay at 12:47 on the power play for his fifth goal of the season from
Dylan Jouppi and Bauer.
The teams competed back-and-forth in the third period, but neither team would score. DU's defense allowed just two shots on goal in the final period.
Reid Ramsay got the start in net for Davenport and stopped 16 shots. Ryan Harris stood tall between the pipes for the Lakers with 19 saves.
The teams were able to generate more shots on goal on Saturday as GVSU held a 32-28 advantage. Davenport came out strong in the first period with a 12-3 margin in shots on goal and led 1-0. Gutschick found the back of the net for the second straight game at 9:02 from
Robert McLaughlin and
Jake Alton. The Lakers would tie the game at 11:37 of the third period as Kamryn Hellman scored his sixth goal of the season from Clayton Senti. Hellman would end the game at 3:48 of overtime as Bauer took a slashing penalty and Hellman's power play goal was assisted by Carson Wood. Adrian Morales stopped 27-of-28 shots at goaltender for Grand Valley State, while
Kyler Lowden had a solid night stopping 30-of-32 shots in net for Davenport.
The Panthers will be back on the ice beginning Friday, Nov. 14 with a home game against Western Michigan starting at 7:30 PM.
