Meet the Freshmen: Tristan “Monkly” Whitman

For Tristan Whitman, better known to teammates as Monkly — or sometimes Titration — volleyball started as something to fill the time. Now, it's become his next big challenge on the collegiate stage.

A
freshman from Climax, Michigan, Tristan joins the Panthers as a Setter, bringing strong leadership instincts and a steady presence to one of the most important positions on the court.

"I was only playing baseball at the time and wanted another sport to play because I was bored," he said. "So I picked up volleyball — and it just stuck."

After four years with the game, that decision has clearly paid off. Tristan's favorite volleyball memory came during his senior season when his team won the homeschool volleyball national championship in Kansas — a moment that solidified his love for competition and team success.

Off the court, Tristan enjoys keeping things simple. In the summer, you'll usually find him hanging out with friends or playing rounds of golf. He also has an impressive off-season talent: he's a very strong skier, a skill that reflects both his athletic versatility and love for outdoor challenges.

When it comes to game-day routines, Tristan prefers to stay light. "I don't really eat before games," he said. "It makes me feel slow and heavy." Instead, he locks in with music — particularly Drake — as he gets ready to run the offense from the setter's spot.
Choosing Davenport University came down to the people and the opportunities ahead. "I really enjoyed the guys after I met them," Tristan said. "And I felt like Davenport would provide me with good opportunities."

Looking toward the future, Tristan's goals are simple and driven: "I'm excited to keep working, getting better, and winning."

With his competitive mindset, growing experience, and team-first attitude, Tristan "Monkly" Whitman is ready to step into his freshman season focused on growth — and ready to help guide the Panthers toward success.
