Meet the Freshmen: Shaquann “Shaq” Amenuvor

For Shaquann Amenuvor, or as everyone calls him, Shaq, this season marks a major milestone — his first as a college volleyball player.

Originally from Kentwood, Michigan, Shaq joins the Davenport men's volleyball team as a Middle, bringing athleticism, focus, and plenty of positive energy to the court.

"Playing college volleyball has been my favorite moment so far," Shaq said. "It's something I've worked hard for, and it feels great to finally be here."

Shaq is still relatively new to the sport — he's been playing for only two years — but you'd never know it from how quickly he's picked it up. His growth and enthusiasm have already caught the attention of teammates and coaches alike.

Part of what makes volleyball special for Shaq is the friendships that come with it. "My friend from Italy, Nico, and my friend from Germany, Sam — they've been a big part of my experience," he said. "We've built a really good connection on and off the court."

When he's not playing volleyball, you can probably find Shaq in the gym. "I like working out," he said simply — a statement that fits perfectly with his strong, hardworking style of play. He also has a surprising hidden talent: he's good at golf. "Not a lot of people expect that," he added with a grin.

On game days, Shaq keeps things simple: water with electrolytes to stay hydrated and music by Devon Hendryx to get in the zone.

As for why he chose Davenport University, his answer says a lot about his mindset: "The team here seemed friendly, and the program is good," he said. "Both are true, by the way."

Looking ahead, Shaq is eager to challenge himself. "I'm excited to play hard teams and get that college-level experience," he said. "That's how you get better — by pushing yourself."

Friendly, motivated, and ready to learn, Shaquann "Shaq" Amenuvor is approaching his freshman season with the same dedication he brings to everything he does. And if his first few months on campus are any sign, there's a lot to look forward to.
