Panthers Fall 67-54 to Lakers

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell 67-54 to Grand Valley State University at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers (5-22, 1-18  GLIAC) were in the game late, as a layup by Dylan Smith trimmed the DU deficit to one (55-54) with 7:28 remaining. However, DU went scoreless for the remainder of the contest. 

Alden Ritt had an impressive first half, knocking down three three-pointers and scoring 11 points in the opening 20 minutes. The redshirt sophomore hit his first triple 5:10 into the first half, putting the Panthers ahead of the Lakers (15-12, 11-8 GLIAC) by two (10-8).

DU put together a 6-0 run to end the half, including four points from Jaden Terrell, but GVSU had a 33-28 lead heading into the break.

In the early stages of the second half, a Matyas Vrabel layup spurred an 8-0 DU run, tying the game at 36 apiece. However, the Panthers were unable to regain the lead at any point in the second half.

Ritt finished with 13 points and a career-high three three-pointers to lead the Panthers. Jovan Tucker added 13 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in the loss for DU. Joey Cabana chipped in with eight points, two rebounds and an assist.

The Panthers will close their 2024-25 campaign on Thursday (Feb. 27), as they are set to host Roosevelt at 7:30 p.m. at the DU Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
