DU downed by QU game-winner in final seconds

QUINCY, Ill. - Davenport University men's lacrosse went the distance with Quincy University, as a goal in the final seconds gave the Hawks a 15-14 edge over the Panthers.

Saturday (Feb. 8) marked another road contest for the Panthers, as QU opened the first period with three unanswered goals. Seve Cordero tucked in the first two scores for DU, both assisted by Luke Eichbauer, as Eichbauer notched his first at the 4:17 mark to keep the Panthers within striking distance, 5-3.

The offense woke up in the second to create a 5-0 scoring run led by Dieter Bloch, Eichbauer, Luke Fritz, Dylan Fallon, and Jayden Ashley. The defense nearly shut out the opponent in the period, but two goals by QU in the last two minutes finished the half with DU up 8-7. Cordero and Fallon matched the Hawks' scores to keep the Panthers in front going into the fourth quarter, 10-9.

Fallon and Logan Flaherty created a two-point cushion with 10:17 remaining, but QU's 4-2 scoring run in just over seven minutes knotted the scoreboard at 14 apiece. Anxiety grew and desperation shots couldn't find the inside of the net over the next few minutes as an overtime period was nearly on tap. However, a heartbreaker with 16 seconds left gave the Hawks the win.

Cordero (four), Fallon (three), and Eichbauer (three) led the goal effort, as Eichbauer (six) and Dawson Gillette (three) were the team's assist leaders. Flaherty went 24-of-29 in faceoffs and tallied the team-high for groundballs (15), as Antonio Hart made 16 saves in goal.

DU will continue non-conference road action next week with a date against Maryville on Saturday, Feb. 15.
