Panthers Split Season Opener Against Bridgeport

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Davenport University softball team split its opening two games of the season on Saturday evening against Bridgeport at the Space Coast Games. The doubleheader marked the first two out of 10 games the Panthers will play while in the Sunshine State.

Game One vs. Bridgeport
Result: W, 5-4
How it Happened
After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, the Panthers responded with two runs in the fourth to gain a 2-1 advantage over the Purple Knights. Ally Prasnjak opened the inning with a double to left field. On the ensuing at-bat, Kailyne Luna reached on a fielder's choice while Prasnjak rounded the bases to score the first run of the game for DU.

After Luna advanced to third on a passed ball, Kylie Hegland batted her in with a single to second base.

Bridgeport scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. However, in the eighth, the Panthers scored three runs to take a three-run advantage.

Hegland singled to center field, which brought home Savanna Disbrow, scoring the first run of the inning. Alaina Schwanke came up big for DU, blasting a triple to the right field, allowing Hegland and Darby Kamp to reach home plate and giving the Panthers the three-run cushion.

In the circle, Hailey Whisman pitched all eight innings, recording a career-high eight strikeouts and only three earned runs allowed.

Hegland batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and one run scored for the Panthers. Prasnjak, Luna, Disbrow, Kramp, Schwanke and Grace Gilbert all notched one hit in the season-opening win.
