Whisman Sets Career-High for Second Straight Day

Clermont, Fla. - After setting a career-high in strikeouts (eight) in the season opener against Bridgeport on Friday (Feb. 28), Hailey Whisman followed up that performance with another career-high on Saturday. The sophomore notched nine in a 4-2 win over Clarion.

Saturday also marked the second day of the squad's trip to Florida, going 1-1 on day two of action.

Game One vs. Saint Anselm
Result: L, 3-2
How it Happened
Trailing 1-0 heading into the fourth inning, the Panthers stepped up to the plate and knocked back-to-back home runs out of the park. Savanna Disbrow hit the first one to tie the game 1-1, then on the ensuing at-bat, Darby Kramp also hit one over the fence, giving the Panthers a 2-1 advantage.

However, the Hawks answered with two runs in the fifth inning, taking a 3-2 advantage down the stretch. In the final inning, Grace Gilbert doubled with one out on the board, giving DU a chance to potentially tie the game in the seventh. However, the Panthers were unable to bring her home and fell short by one run.

Despite the loss, the Panthers recorded more hits than the Hawks (6 to 4).

In the circle, the Panthers utilized three pitchers. Mariah Stines pitched 4.3 innings and notched a pair of strikeouts in the loss.

Offensively, Disbrow and Gilbert led the way, each finishing the game with two hits. Alaina Schwanke and Kramp added one hit apiece.

Game Two vs. Clarion
Result: W, 4-2
How it Happened
Pitching all seven innings, Whisman anchored the DU defense, recording nine strikeouts and only allowing one earned run in the victory.

The Panthers' offense did nearly all of its damage in the sixth inning. Madison Cole got things going with a double down the right-field line. On the ensuing at-bat, Gilbert recorded a single, advancing Cole to third base. A sacrifice fly from Ally Prasnjak brought home Cole, trimming the DU deficit to one (2-1).

With one out on the board and in need of a big play, Disbrow stepped into the box and registered a two-RBi double to left field, allowing Gilbert and Kailyne Luna to score, putting DU on top 3-2. Disbrow reached home on the next at-bat off a sacrifice fly, moving the Panthers ahead 4-2.

In the final inning with two outs and one runner on base, Whisman delivered the final blow, striking out Haylie Rimmey.

Up Next
The Panthers will resume play on Sunday (March 2), taking on Walsh and Wheeling. The first game will take place at 7:15 p.m. with the second game to follow.
