MARQUETTE, Mich. - The women's lacrosse team could not contain Northern Michigan early in Friday's GLIAC opener and ultimately could not come back in a 9-6 loss to the Wildcats. NMU came out inspired in the first quarter and built a 6-1 lead. Josie Lakosky scored three of her team's first four goals to get a 4-0 lead with 5:23 left in the opening quarter.
Theadora Krueger stopped the momentum with a goal for DU at 3:50. Sophie Langsdale and Maddi Bast however closed out the quarter with goals.
Ele Darmofal started a comeback attempt with a goal at 12:23 of the second quarter.
Blakely Malpass and Darmofal again, this time early in the third quarter, made it 6-4. The teams traded goals for the rest of the game as the Wildcats kept the Panthers a safe distance away. Malpass scored her second of the game at 3:13 of the third quarter.
Lauryn Hansen scored at 6:34 remaining in the game to make it 8-6. Hannah Jabas gave NMU one more insurance goal with 1:35 to play.
Northern Michigan finished with 32 total shots including 19 shots on goal. Davenport recorded 20 total shots including eight on goal for a high percentage of 6-of-8 resulting in a goal. Both teams had 17 turnovers and the big stat was that the Wildcats won 15-of-19 draw controls.
Rachel Livak in her second straight start kept her team in the game with 13 saves.
Jade Remacle led the team with three caused turnovers.
