Lakers Edge Panthers Twice in Battle for 616

CALEDONIA, Mich. - In what was an evenly matched doubleheader, the Davenport University softball team fell twice to Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.

Despite the loss, the two squads put up nearly identical offensive outputs, as the Panthers (13-15, 4-4 GLIAC) finished the two games with a total of 18 hits, while the Lakers (15-15, 6-2 GLIAC) finished with 19.

Game One
Result: L, 5-4
How it Happened
GVSU did nearly all of its damage in the top of the third, scoring all five of its runs and recording six hits in the half inning, taking a 5-0 lead.

With runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth, Grace Gilbert sent the ball to left field, which brought home Alaina Schwanke for the first run of the day for DU. Later in the inning, Brooke Bernt singled through the right side, bringing home Hannah Mauer and Gilbert. As the play continued, the Grand Valley State right fielder threw the ball too low to the third baseman, which allowed Kailyne Luna to reach home plate, trimming the DU deficit to one (5-4).

Davenport had a chance to take the lead in the sixth with the bases loaded, but could not capitalize.

In the circle, Julia Perry and Hailey Whisman split time for DU.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Schwanke with two hits and a run scored. Savanna Disbrow ended the game batting 2-for-3 for the Panthers, while Brook Bernt added a hit and two RBIs.

Game Two
Result: L, 5-3
How it Happened
In a similar fashion to game one, the Lakers got out to an early advantage, this time with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

DU had a monster fifth inning to tie the game at three apiece. Ally Prasnjak doubled to left center field to get the scoring started, bringing home Luna. On the ensuing at-bat, Schwanke doubled to left field, bringing in two more runs (Prasnjak and Bernt).

Again the Panthers left two base runners on in the sixth and seventh innings after the Lakers scored two runs in the top of the sixth.

Three Panthers spent time in the circle; Hannah Tahney, Whisman and Perry.

Offensively, Prasnjak led the Panthers with two hits, one RBI and a run scored. Schwanke finished the game with two hits and two RBIs, while Darby Kramp chipped in with two hits.

Up Next
The Panthers will host Purdue Northwest on Tuesday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Mich.
