Smith Records Season-High in Battle of Panthers

OWENSBORO, Ky. -  The Davenport University softball team split its second doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Peyton Smith had the best game of her young career, registering a season-high three hits in the opening game.

Game One
Result: W, 3-2
How it Happened
It was arguably Davenport's best offensive performance of the season, recording a season-best 13 hits in the victory. 

Kailyne Luna scored the first run of the game as Savanna Disbrow singled up the middle to bring her home in the first inning.

In the top of the third, DU had the bases loaded but was unable to capitalize. Davenport had three hits in the inning coming from Alaina Schwanke, Kylie Hegland and Smith.

Grace Gilbert scored in the top of the fourth off an error by KWC, pushing their lead to 2-0. However, Wesleyan tied the game at two apiece in the bottom of the inning following a pair of runs.

The DU offense got hot in the final inning, recording four hits. Brooke Bernt loaded the bases with a single to third base. On the ensuing at-bat, Smith drove home Disbrow, which ended up being the game-winning run.

Smith led the way, batting 3-for-4 with a double and a game-winning RBI. Disbrow added two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Luna finished with two hits and one run. Schwanke and Hegland chipped in with two hits apiece.

In the circle, Schwanke picked up her first win of the season.

Game Two
Result: L, 4-3
How it Happened
Darby Kramp notched her second home run of the season in the fourth inning, putting the first run of the game on the board for DU.

In the fifth inning, Disbrow singled up the middle to bring Luna and Bernt home, giving Davenport a 3-2 advantage over Wesleyan. However, in the bottom of the sixth KWC answered with a pair of runs to gain back a one-run advantage.

DU ended with five different players recording a hit; Ally Prasnjak, Disbrow, Kramp, Smith and Bernt.
