WLAX Preview: Panthers start second round of GLIAC games

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – This will be a pivotal week for the Davenport women's lacrosse team as they enter the second round of GLIAC games having navigated a record of 1-3 in the conference through the first round of games. They are currently in fourth place in the conference standings, but could make a jump with wins over Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and Northern Michigan on Sunday. Four GLIAC teams are above .500 overall as Davenport is 6-5. Concordia-St. Paul is 7-5 and Northern Michigan is 8-5.

The first time around against this week's opponents could have gone either way. DU fell 9-6 back on Mar. 28 at NMU and then two days later fell 11-9 at CSP. Last week, the Panthers fell 12-3 against then No. 19 Grand Valley State on Thursday and then rebounded with a 22-6 win over first-year program Saginaw Valley State on Sunday.

Blakely Malpass tied her season high with five goals against the Cardinals on Sunday. She is currently ranked fourth in the GLIAC with a total of 28 goals this season. Ele Darmofal scored a career-high four goals and added an assist. Maddy Haynes scored three times and inched close to a career milestone with 94 career goals. Jenna Gillis was back after missing the previous three games and led the team with three assists. Brianna Rodriguez led the team with six draw controls and also contributed a goal and two assists. Addison Roe, Addison Hardin, Mika Kulynych, and Alyssa Bird also scored two goals each.

Concordia-St. Paul enters this week after a 13-9 win back on Apr. 5 against Northern Michigan. Susie Monson had her fifth game of the season in which she scored at least three goals. She also won eight draw controls and caused two turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Colleran made 11 saves in the win to add to her season total of 64 saves. Anna Fisher had a hat trick for the eighth time this season. The Golden Bears outshot the Wildcats, 33-23, while forcing 21 turnovers to earn their first win over NMU since 2022. Monson leads the GLIAC with 22 assists and 5.08 draw controls per game. Fisher ranks second in the conference in four categories, including total goals (38), goals per game (3.17), shots per game (7.33) and shots on goal per game (5.25).

Northern Michigan is coming off a weekend split in Minnesota as they fell to Concordia-St. Paul before coming back for a win over Concordia-St. Benedict on Sunday.
